Sacred Music

Cathy has been making music in church her entire life. As a child she sang and rang handbells in the Lutheran church that her grandparents founded, then as a teenager she would play trumpet and piano, and later organ, for services. Feeling a call to continue this as a career, she earned a Bachelor’s of Music from the University of North Texas with a Specialization in Church Music and a Master’s in Sacred Music from Boston University’s School of Theology. From there she went on to build music programs in four New England UCC churches, sharing the joy of singing and playing instruments in worship with hundreds of children and adults. She currently serves as Minister of Music for South Church in Andover, Massachusetts, where she oversees and directs four children’s choruses, an adult choir, handbells, and the worship band. She also provides Music Ministry consulting for Protestant churches, giving congregations the tools they need to develop and grow their music programs. Her sacred music experience, theological training, and adept interpersonal skills make her a valuable resource for congregations who may be in transition, are experiencing conflict, or simply want a fresh perspective. Performance

Cathy is a freelance organist, pianist, conductor, and collaborative musician. She performs solo concerts and collaborative recitals, but also enjoys providing family-friendly events such as Halloween organ & light shows. She is the Music Director and conductor for the One Spirit Foundation, leading them in monthly interfaith programs in houses of worship around western Massachusetts. Recent recital programs have taken place at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, Merrimack College, Endicott College, South Church in Andover, Memorial Hall Library, Christ Episcopal Church, with upcoming performances scheduled at South Church in Andover and at Faith Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington. Education

A good teacher not only provides the tools required to achieve greater skill, but also inspires their students to be more creative, disciplined, and curious. After having the fortunate experience of studying with many inspirational organists, conductors, vocalists, and pianists, Cathy works to do the same for others. Lessons and rehearsals should be tailored to the specific goals or each student, while developing proper technique and historically-informed performance practices. She works to build lasting relationships with her students, adding to the essential support-system that every aspiring musician needs.

As a choir director, she begins teaching children from infancy, setting the tone that music should be a part of every human life. As children progress through her choir program they are exposed to music from different cultures, genres, and time periods. By the time they graduate from her program, not only can they read music but their eyes have been opened to a diverse world of sound and possibility. She has been directing children’s choruses for over 25 years, giving young singers a safe place to experiment with their voices, teaching them how to sing organically, freely, and with confidence, giving hundreds of youth life-changing experiences and friendships centered around music.

As an organ instructor, her students have gone on to to major in performance, receiving scholarships at highly-acclaimed music schools and performing recitals in the Boston area. She is a teacher with the American Guild of Organists’ Young Organist Initiative and also enjoys leading youth-focused fun events like Pedals, Pipes & Pizza, to promoting an interest for the next generation of organists.

Cathy also serves as Sub-Dean for the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is on the executive board for the Belmont Parents of Music Students and One Spirit Foundation.

Every special day in your life deserves special music! When planning an important service such as a wedding or a funeral, it’s very important to line up the best music possible, as the music will set the tone for everything else. Whether you have a definite idea of how it should sound or are at the beginning of the discerning process, Cathy’s professionalism, creativity, and sensitivity will ensure that the music is a perfect fit.

She can assist you in finding other musicians, if you are looking for a vocalist or instrumentalist as well. Base price for weddings and funerals is $300, plus additional fees may be incurred with additional musicians, required travel, or other extenuating circumstances.
